Dysmenorrhea

Ayurvedic Care for Dysmenorrhea at Sreesurya Ayurveda

Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstrual cramps that occur before or during menstruation. For many women, this monthly discomfort can interfere with daily life, causing fatigue, backache, nausea, and emotional stress. In Ayurveda, dysmenorrhea is often linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which governs movement and pain in the body.

At Sreesurya Ayurveda, we offer a natural and holistic solution to dysmenorrhea by addressing the root cause of the pain rather than just suppressing the symptoms. Our treatments are personalized to each woman’s body constitution, menstrual history, and lifestyle.

Understanding Dysmenorrhea in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, painful menstruation occurs when the flow of Apana Vata (a sub-type of Vata responsible for downward movement, including menstruation) is obstructed or aggravated. This imbalance can lead to cramping, dryness, bloating, and intense lower abdominal pain. Contributing factors include poor digestion, cold exposure, sedentary habits, stress, and consumption of heavy or stale foods.

Our Ayurvedic Approach to Treatment

1. Herbal Medicines
We use a combination of Ayurvedic herbs such as Ashoka, Lodhra, Dashamoola, Shatavari, and Hingwashtak Churna, which are known to regulate menstrual flow, reduce spasms, ease inflammation, and balance Vata dosha.

2. Panchakarma Detox Therapies
In chronic or severe cases, Panchakarma therapies like Basti (medicated enema) and Abhyanga (herbal oil massage) are recommended. These therapies help detoxify the reproductive system, reduce pain, and support overall balance.

3. Diet and Lifestyle Modifications
Women are advised to follow a Vata-pacifying diet—warm, cooked, easily digestible foods with ghee and digestive spices. Avoiding cold foods, processed items, and irregular eating habits is key. Adequate rest, stress reduction, and gentle yoga also help.

4. Heat Therapy and Massage
Local application of warm herbal oils to the abdomen or back can help ease cramps. Herbal fomentation (Swedana) is also used to relieve stiffness and pain.
